Lyon: From River Views to Ancient History

Yesterday we took a much needed “rest” day so I didn’t bring you any news… Let’s catch up! We left the Mayor’s house after enjoying the bread and croissants he brought us from a local bakery for breakfast. On this subject…

I have now tried croissants from several bakeries in France, including some of my favorites… and I still believe ours surpass many French bakeries! How lucky you are to have The French Kitchen in Colorado Springs!

Pictured below is the Mayor’s house and the cute little Mairie (City Hall) building.

Following the Via Rhôna signs (that is the route we are following throughout our entire trip), it was a quick 35-mile ride to get to Ste Foy-Les-Lyon, where I was born. Lyon is very bike-friendly and the banks of the Rhone River are very pleasant to ride along and offer amazing views of the city.
We also visited the Saone River, the second river in Lyon, as well as Place Bellecour, Lyon’s main square.
I had to test out another croissant along the way…
Strictly for research purposes, of course!

When we arrived at my parents’ home, we got a tour of my dad’s beloved garden… and did laundry, the French way… with no dryer. My mom prepared a yummy lunch with salads from the garden, Ravioles (mini gourmet raviolis from my region), a duck neck pâté, cheese, and homemade tiramisu!

We then headed, by foot and “Ficelle” (subway-type train) to visit the old part of Lyon and visit the Basilic of La Fourviere.

Did you know? We have the Fourviere Basilic represented in our Café mural! Try to find it next time you visit!

In Vieux Lyon (Old Town), many streets have secret “traboules”, which are little passages hidden behind old building doors that lead to apartments and cute interior courtyards. We also found a fun Food Mall, with many different style shops!

Our final stop was at the first-century Roman Theater before driving to a small village close to Grenoble to spend the weekend with friends. Guess what?! They got an incredible Reblochon for me!

Stay tuned for another update coming soon!
